Tillie crept around the back of the barn, keeping to the shadows. Just as she was about to edge around a corner, she noticed a small piece of wood, nailed to the structure. It looked like it had been put there to patch a hole. She tapped on her com. “I think I found a way in.” She tugged at the board. It didn’t move. “But I need a pry bar.” She looked around but found nothing useful.

Something landed next to her. It was a small Swiss army knife. Tillie inspected the tools it contained and pulled out the nail file. Not ideal, but maybe she could make it work. She pried at the nails used to affix the board and slowly removed a few. Then she slid the knife in between the barn and the board and pulled. The board popped free and she set it on the ground. She stuck her head through the hole. “Dammit,” she muttered. “Empty.”

The house had also been empty. Maybe no one was on the farm at all. She had not heard any sounds. No humans. No animals. Strange.

“Only two more to go,” Abdul responded.

Tillie grunted. There was no way the other barns would have similar openings. Staying close to the ground, she crawled to the next barn. Before she even slid through the door, she sensed it was empty. There were no lights or noises that indicated the presence of living beings. The next barn was on the other side of the yard. Running across the open area was too risky. She would have to stick to the wooded perimeter. Groaning softly, Tillie crawled into the brush. Carefully, she stood and brushed off the sticks and leaves that had become embedded in her ninja suit. Then she bent over at the waist and ran to the back of the third barn.

It quickly became evident that the structure was not empty. Tillie heard what sounded like a woman crying. Then another began to wail. “Hush up,” a deep voice said. “Crying ain’t going to get you out of here. How do you think I feel? I’m used to sleeping in a bed. I ain’t never been put in a barn, chained to a stall, left to sleep in the hay. This is degrading. Unless you can help us get out of here, shut your pie hole.”

“Oh, leave them be,” said someone said with a posh British accent. “They are new here. Soon enough, they will learn what it is like to be an animal. There is no backing out once you commit.”

Another wail went up.

Tillie searched the backside of the barn for an opening. She found nothing. She gazed at the second story of the barn. There was a large door up there. It probably provided access to a hayloft. The door was shut but slightly ajar. Maybe she could rappel up the wall and enter through there. She tapped her com. “I found them. Well, some anyway. Third barn, the one across the yard.
